Contact problems

Just a reminder of how difficult it may be to conduct an interview with someone from a non-profit organisation was again highlighted. First i made a phone call to WSPA’s Australia office, the receptionist was quite friendly and said that their staff responsible for this sort of inquiry was not at the office and that a reply would be made once they were in. I followed up with an email to alert them of the details of the interview and the reason for it. After a week of no response I decided to make a phone call again and see whether they have forgotten. Sure enough they had put the request to the side as they had more important things to do, and the person responsible for contacting me again was not in the office. I left them a personal message asking for an interview or at least some answers to questions I would send via the net. I received a reply later that afternoon stating that they will no longer be conducting interviews with students as there had been many requests over the year.

This kind of got me thinking about the reasons why organisations would provide assistance in these matters in the first place. Usually it would be to get a good name within the community and abroad. Also the individual may join later on in their life and recommend the organisation to their friends. So basically it would have to benefit them somehow, so that they would take an interest in the matter. During such a busy time, seen by the length of time to respond and unavailability of staff, it seems it wasn’t in their best interests to provide assistance to a student. Had it been anyone from the world of media, best bets they would of had enthusiastically provided the necessary information and assistance.

So best of all, if conducting some research and need an interview with someone from an organisation it would be of great benefit to make contact straight away. And if your a student educate them as to how much them assisting you will benefit them in the future.
